The Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1480) by Hugo van der Goes – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Painted around 1480 by Early Netherlandish master Hugo van der Goes (housed in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, Germany), The Adoration of the Shepherds (Anbetung der Hirten) is one of the most innovative and theatrical compositions of 15th-century European art.

The panoramic masterpiece features two Old Testament prophets standing on opposite sides of the foreground, physically drawing back a green curtain to reveal the sacred Nativity scene to the viewer—acting as both narrators and visual bridge into the holy event. At the center, the newborn Christ Child rests on glowing straw as Mary, Joseph, angels, and deeply realistic, weather-worn shepherds gather in reverent awe. Van der Goes’ revolutionary realism in depicting ordinary working-class shepherds set a new benchmark for Northern Renaissance art.
