Juan Gris – Harlequin with Guitar (1919) Cubism – Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction by Dafen Village Studio

Painted in 1919 during Gris’s mature post-war period, Harlequin with Guitar represents one of the artist’s most celebrated explorations of the classic Harlequin motif—a favorite subject among Cubist masters including Picasso and Cézanne. Gris constructs the standing figure of the musician using overlapping diagonal planes, diamond-patterned costume elements, and smooth tonal gradients. Balancing architectural rigor with poetic expression, the composition blends subtle grays, deep ochres, and muted blues to achieve a serene visual balance. Recreating this artwork requires meticulous brushwork to capture both the crisp geometric boundaries and the smooth, luminous glazes characteristic of Gris’s late style.
