Painted during his final, most visionary period in Toledo between 1603 and 1614, Saint Ildefonso is one of El Greco’s (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) most revered portrayals of Toledo’s patron saint.
The painting depicts Saint Ildefonso (607–667 AD), the scholar-archbishop, seated in his study writing his famous treatise defending the perpetual virginity of Mary. Pausing in contemplation, he looks toward a small statue of the Virgin Mary on his desk for divine inspiration. Executed in El Greco’s late Mannerist style, the masterpiece features striking crimson textiles, fluid brushwork, and an atmosphere of quiet intellectual and spiritual intensity.
