Saint Jerome (c. 1610–1614) by El Greco – Hand-Painted Oil Painting RepLaocoön (c. 1610–1614) by El Greco – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Artroduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Painted in his final years in Toledo between 1610 and 1614, Laocoön is a rare and extraordinary masterpiece by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)—notable as his only known surviving painting depicting a classical mythological theme.

The artwork illustrates the famous tragic tale from Virgil’s Aeneid during the Trojan War. The Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons are attacked by giant sea serpents sent by divine powers after Laocoön warned his countrymen against accepting the Wooden Horse. In a uniquely personal twist, El Greco set this ancient legend against a dramatic, stormy background of his beloved adopted city of Toledo, Spain, standing in for Troy. Executed in his extreme late Mannerist style, the canvas features expressive, elongated anatomy, ghostly tonal hues, and visceral emotional intensity.
