Created in 1887 near the end of his life, Alexandre Cabanel’s Cleopatra Testing Poisons on Those Condemned to Death (Cléopâtre essayant des poisons sur des condamnés à mort) stands as a monumental masterpiece of late 19th-century French Academicism and Orientalism. The painting depicts Queen Cleopatra reclining languidly on a couch adorned with leopard skin, watching with cold fascination as condemned prisoners writhe from the effects of lethal poisons. The original masterpiece is preserved in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium.
Recreated by senior master painters at Dafen Village Oil Painting Studio, this reproduction is executed entirely by hand on heavy-duty linen canvas. We strictly avoid digital prints, canvas transfers, or automated under-layers. Following classical academic painting methods, our artists build up subtle skin tones, intricate architectural carvings, rich textile patterns, and atmospheric shadows layer by layer using traditional multi-pass glazing to preserve the dramatic weight and vivid color depth of Cabanel’s original canvas.
