Executed in 1840 when the artist was seventeen years old, Alexandre Cabanel’s Self Portrait (aged 17) (Autoportrait à 17 ans) marks a pivotal stage in the development of one of France’s ultimate Academic masters. Created during his training in Paris under François-Édouard Picot, this portrait displays a mature grasp of anatomical form, dramatic dark backgrounds, and romantic intensity. The original canvas is preserved at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, France.
Recreated by senior portrait specialists at Dafen Village Oil Painting Studio, this reproduction is crafted strictly by hand on heavy-duty linen canvas. We never employ digital printing, canvas overlays, or mechanical shortcuts. Utilizing classical academic techniques—including meticulous charcoal underdrawing and multi-pass oil glazing—our artists faithfully capture the soft skin tones, subtle shadow transitions, and introspective gaze of the young artist.
