In Shenzhen, Dafen Ölmalerei Dorf is widely recognized as a major cultural landmark. Nationally, Dafen has been named a National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base, and internationally it is often described as a key source of hand-painted oil artworks for the global market.

Much of Dafen’s early reputation and momentum is closely linked to one pioneering figure: painter Huang Jiang, frequently referred to as the founding builder of Dafen’s painting industry. Over decades, he helped shape Dafen from a quiet village into a thriving creative community—one that connects art production, galleries, education, and an expanding ecosystem of materials and services.

From Difficult Beginnings to Cultural Opportunity

Huang Jiang, now nearly 80, originally from Guangdong, developed a strong interest in literature and later encountered fine art after moving to Hong Kong. In 1980, he began bringing art training and production into mainland China, traveling through multiple regions before choosing Shenzhen as his long-term base.

After careful research, he set his sights on the then underdeveloped Dafen Village. Only a few dozen painters joined him in those early “frontier” days. Huang Jiang ran markets in the summer heat, sought business opportunities, and frequently traveled between Shenzhen and Hong Kong to secure orders. To meet deadlines, he and his painters worked late into the night—laying the foundations for what would later become Dafen’s world-famous painting industry.

Around the year 2000, China began promoting “cultural industry” at the national level, and Shenzhen adopted a city strategy of strengthening culture. This policy shift created a major opportunity for Dafen. With government support and infrastructure investment, Dafen developed new public art spaces, exhibition halls, galleries, and a more international village-style environment—earning it the nickname of a “European-style oil painting village” in Shenzhen.

Artistic Growth and International Visibility

Dafen’s rise became especially visible in 2004, when Shenzhen hosted its first Cultural Industry Fair and Dafen was selected as the only sub-venue. Large-scale public painting events brought strong attention and pride to local artists and galleries. Over time, Dafen’s art community expanded, supporting both market demand and increasing numbers of original artists.

Major exhibitions, including international biennial-style events, further strengthened Dafen’s cultural influence and helped position the village in a new era—one that emphasizes both market vitality and original creation.

A Cultural Spirit Beyond Painting

Beyond industry, Huang Jiang has been described as a person deeply committed to cultural exchange and public cultural promotion. Through years of effort, he used painting not only to build an industry, but also to support cultural communication and community connection—helping Dafen become a symbol of Shenzhen’s creative energy and human spirit.

Today, Dafen’s story is not only about production or commerce. It is about how ordinary artists, organized work, and long-term dedication can shape a city’s cultural identity—and how a single person’s determination can plant the seed for an entire cultural ecosystem.
